The Window Watcher
Spends hours perched by the window, watching something only it understands. Ignores strangers entirely — but grants the chosen few access to its full affection, complete with head-bumps and endless purring.
At home
The windowsill is a throne and the whole afternoon is spent on it, paws tucked, eyes half shut, watching a branch that is not doing anything. A bird arrives, leaves, and receives no comment. Around six the light slides off the sill and the cat slides after it, one blanket at a time, toward the quietest corner of the apartment. Whatever the subject was up there, it travels with her, and the person who lives here has learned to carry the laundry the long way around.
Facing the unfamiliar
A doorbell empties the room. This one is under the bed before the first coat comes off and stays there for the length of the visit, listening, shifting one paw occasionally. The carrier gets a single long thin complaint and then nothing at all. Yet leave a bag from outside standing in the hall and an hour goes into studying it from three rooms away, without one step being taken in that direction. Nothing here is refused. It is postponed until nobody is looking.
With you
Affection is not handed out evenly. A stranger gets nothing, not so much as a turn of the head on the sill. The chosen person gets the entire ceremony: a forehead pushed up under the chin, a slow settle onto the lap, and a purr that runs long past the point where everyone else has stopped noticing. Being picked is less like being liked than like being issued a key. The chosen person, meanwhile, has not stood up in forty minutes and has stopped intending to.
