The Mystic
Knows how the family feels without a word being said. On sad days, naps at your feet while purring; on busy days, stays quiet in the cat tower until your work is done, then offers a gentle head bump. A soul so attuned you wonder if this is truly a cat and not something far older.
At home
This one reads the room before anyone has said a word. On a heavy morning it appears at your feet and stays, purring low, asking for nothing. On a loud one it withdraws to the top tier of the cat tower and grooms the same paw for twenty minutes, watching. The laptop closes and exactly then, not a minute earlier, a head arrives under your elbow. Nobody in this house has worked out how the timing is managed.
Facing the unfamiliar
Guests are neither greeted nor escaped. A middle shelf is taken, the paws fold in, and the visitors are studied for the length of the entire evening while something private is settled about each of them. The one guest who would rather not be near a cat is the one whose knee gets chosen, somewhere in the second hour. When a strange animal appears beyond the balcony glass, one ear turns and nothing else moves. The guests go home convinced they were the ones being interviewed.
With you
Living here feels like being understood without ever having explained. This one is already beside the door you were about to open, already on the arm of the couch on the evening that went badly, close enough that a paw rests against your sleeve. It does not perform comfort. It arrives and it stays until the room feels lighter. On the days when nothing at all is wrong it does exactly the same thing, which is how you find out what kind of day you were having.
