At home
Latches are a hobby. The cabinet with the snack pouch, the drawer that never quite shuts, the handle with a little give — each gets studied at length and opened eventually, usually while everyone is asleep. The mug on the desk is not knocked over in a hurry, either. It is edged toward the rim one paw-width at a time, with the eye contact held the whole way, because the interesting part is what you do.
Facing the unfamiliar
The carrier is a lock, and it has been solved before. A visitor’s backpack gets opened rather than sniffed. A window left open two centimetres is measured against the width of a head, twice, from different angles. New furniture is worth exactly what it makes reachable — a shelf that leads to the top of a door frame is an excellent chair, and the rest of the room is upholstery.

Affection here runs on interest. Type on a keyboard and a warm body arrives across your wrists; fold laundry and every sheet receives an intervention. Call for no reason and nothing happens at all. Then, at three in the morning, a paw lands on your cheek — not for company, but because a door was found shut, and you are the one who opens doors.
