The Silent Kneader
Never insists on treats with loud meows. Instead, you simply notice one day that it is kneading your lap with quiet determination. A soft purr, a head bump against your hand — affection expressed not in volume but through the smallest, most certain gestures.
At home
This one has opinions about fabric and no way of stating them. The wool blanket gets slept on; the new cushion, which cost more, does not. A towel folded on a chair is claimed within the hour, and the towel is what gets the kneading — slowly, for a quarter of an hour, in complete silence. By evening the blanket is on the floor, dragged there by nobody in particular.
Facing the unfamiliar
Guests bring out the hideaway. This one slips into the den under the shelf and lets the entire evening happen from in there, listening to voices it has no intention of meeting, and comes out once the last coat has left the hook. A stranger who sits on the floor and waits is granted one nose, at around the forty-minute mark, and nothing further that evening. The good part of life is kept under that shelf, and there is room in it for exactly one.
With you
Nothing is ever asked for out loud. You look down one evening and both front paws are working slowly into your thigh, claws catching the fabric a little, the purr already running, and there is no telling when any of it began. That is the entire vocabulary: a forehead pushed up under your hand, a cheek against your ankle in the hallway, a warm weight arriving at the hour you needed it. Those trousers are finished. Nobody mentions it.
