The House Manager
Monitors the household from high ground. Interrogates guests by scent, follows family members between rooms to ensure their safety, and announces dinner with clockwork precision. A natural leader whose authority is absolute yet rarely loud.
At home
The top of the cat tree is an office, not a bed. From up there the household gets counted: who is in the kitchen, who shut a door, who has been alone too long. Whoever is missing receives a visit. Dinner is announced with one clear call, on the minute, and once everyone is back where they belong the count starts again from the top, because people move.
Facing the unfamiliar
Guests are checked at the door, ankles first, tail up, the nose working through everything the outside left on them. Once approved, they are escorted to a seat — the correct seat — with a cheek printed on the doorframe along the way. New furniture is inspected before the family is allowed to enjoy it. When another animal comes into the house, the spot chosen is exactly halfway between it and the people, and held there all evening.
With you
Being loved by this one feels like being managed, gently. You are followed from room to room, herded toward bed when the hour gets late, and reminded with a head-bump that the greeting was skipped. The purring on your lap at the end of the day is not a request. It is a report, and you are not consulted about the findings.
