Shows its true nature when guests arrive. Rubs against their legs, bunts their face, and when the camera appears, naturally assumes an elegant pose. A born performer with completely different energy when watched versus when alone.
At home
An empty room gets a nap; an occupied one gets a show. The sunbeam on the rug is a stage with the lighting already set, and the roll onto the back happens the moment a pair of eyes lands on it. Half the day is spent draped across whatever you are reading, one paw over the page, aware of exactly how that looks against a pale cushion. Look away and the pose relaxes into something far less flattering.
Facing the unfamiliar
Guests are the reason for the day. Ankles get the head-bump, faces get the cheek, and the second a phone comes out the pose assembles itself — chin lifted, paws crossed, entirely by accident. The window onto the street is a display case rather than a lookout. Even a knock at the door is worth answering, in case somebody out there has not met this cat yet.
With you
Alone with you the volume drops, though it never quite switches off. There is purring against your ribs, a head pushed up under your palm, a long slow blink from across the room. Bring someone home and the whole performance returns, doubled — and somewhere in the middle of it comes a glance to check whether you are laughing. The performance pauses until you do.
