The Household Host

Knows dinner time to the minute and yowls five minutes before. Requires a head-butt greeting on your return — skipping this makes her anxious. Monitors the household from the cat tower all night, then reports at dawn with purrs and paw biscuits. The household's emotional security officer.

At home

The evening call starts five minutes early, every day, from beside the bowl. In between, the apartment is patrolled softly: a check on whoever is in the shower, a wait outside a shut door, a face washed for you whether it needed washing or not. Sleep happens at the junction of the hallway. It is not the most comfortable spot in the apartment. It is the most informative.

Facing the unfamiliar

Every guest is greeted at the door and then supervised. Coats get inspected, seats get suggested, and anyone sitting too far from the group receives a lap visit. When a new animal comes into the house this one hovers, frets, and checks on everybody in turn until the room feels settled. A strange noise outside gets a glance. A guest who has gone quiet gets the rest of the evening.

With you

The greeting is not optional. Come through the door and a head arrives against your shin before your shoes are off; skip it and there is pacing, a stare, a second attempt. The night is spent on watch from the cat tree, and near dawn the whole of it is delivered onto your chest — kneading, purring, a full account of everything that happened while you were unconscious. It begins at ten past five.
